How to Justify Workplace Health & Wellness Programs:

It's Value on Investment (VOI) - Case Closed.  

Program Overview:

It’s 2015 and the debate on the employer return on investment (ROI) for wellness programs is noisier than ever. It’s time to end the clamor. Traditional medical-cost-based ROI methodologies have been challenged as overly optimistic, and sometimes flawed. So, what’s actually working and how do we know it’s working? What are employers actually getting for their money? What’s the real business value of a healthier working population?

The truth is industry best practices are indeed seeing medical cost trends actually bend by deploying smarter health and wellness programs.

Is there value beyond medical cost reduction? A healthier workforce drives improved workforce morale and lower employee turnover. Are there metrics for this? Health-related absenteeism costs can be discretely measured down to the dollar. Presenteeism is often tough to pinpoint, but some companies are measuring how better health improves day-to-day operations.

This presentation will focus on: 1) successfully making the case to senior management for investments in workplace health and wellness; 2) crafting a data-driven strategy for your workforce based on medical and pharmacy claims.


Learning Objectives:

During this session we will review how the new dialogue on workers’ health VOI will shift from a focus on curbing runaway employer expenses, to helping employees curb their own risks and costs. We will address how: 

  • The value of a healthier workforce leads to lower rates of absenteeism and presenteeism.
  • A healthier workforce is more engaged in their jobs and more loyal to their employer.
  • Businesses with healthier workers run better and have been proven to be more profitable.
  • Employers should employ risk stratification to develop strategies specific to their workforce.



Ronald S. Leopold, MD, MPH


Dr. Leopold heads Health Outcomes for the Willis Human Capital Practice. He is a well-recognized industry thought leader in workforce health and productivity.

Ron leads the development and deployment of Willis consulting and solutions in the areas of: health and wellness; clinical data analytics; and absence and productivity.

Dr. Leopold is a longstanding member of the National Speakers Association, and is known for his entertaining style, blending thought-provoking industry insights with compelling illustrations. He has been widely quoted in national and industry publications, and has been a frequent contributor on health and productivity topics. Ron is also recognized as a social media pioneer in his field.

Dr. Leopold’s work addresses various topics, such as: how workforce health impacts business operations, the strategic value of employee benefits, the four generations in the workplace, the value of financial wellness, and the implications of health care reform for American businesses.

Boarded by the American College of Preventive Medicine in Occupational Medicine Physician, Dr. Leopold holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in Public Health from Boston University.

His recent book on the future of employee benefits entitled The Benefits Edge: Honing the Competitive Value of Employee Benefits has been described as a blueprint for benefits in the decade of health care reform.

He is also the author of A Year in the Life of a Million American Workers, an almanac of health, productivity and absence data.
