Updates to the Pay Equity Act – What You Need To Know

Join us on December 18th in Boston for an informative and interactive panel centered on the MA Pay Equity Act!

The MA Pay Equity Act went into effect on July 1, 2018. It may seem like you do not have time to catch up, but actually, there is a lot of work you can still do. We will have updates on what we have seen thus far and updates that have surfaced across the board since the law went into effect.

We will have the unique perspective of a lawyer, a compensation expert and an expert in the topic to answer any questions you might have surrounding this issue. 

This panel will cover the following:

• Questions employers can and cannot ask in the hiring process as to pay history and verification
• Assessing comparable work across functional areas
• The limited scenarios in which variations in wages are acceptable
• Steps employers can take now to protect an organization once the law takes effect
• The role of Human Resources in communicating about compensation both in messaging and timing


Hillary J. Massey, Associate, Seyfarth Shaw LLP

Hillary Massey is an associate in the Labor & Employment department of Seyfarth Shaw LLP.  Ms. Massey represents management in a range of employment-related matters, with a focus on complex wage and hour litigation and equal pay counseling.

Ms. Massey focuses a significant share of her litigation practice on the defense of complex wage and hour claims, including collective actions under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and class claims under the laws of Massachusetts and other states.  She has extensive experience defending against allegations of exempt employee misclassification, independent contractor misclassification and off-the-clock work.

In her counseling practice, Ms. Massey works with in-house counsel and human resource personnel on a variety of employment-related legal issues, including all aspects of employee compensation, terminations, performance counseling, leaves of absence, and accommodations.  Ms. Massey’s recent work is focused on compliance with the various state and local equal pay laws and salary history bans, with a goal of identifying practical employment practices that comply with the laws.

Before law school, Ms. Massey served in the U.S. Army Reserve in the Medical Service Corps and volunteered with the U.S. Peace Corps in Zambia.  After law school, Ms. Massey clerked at the Supreme Judicial Court for Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall and at the U.S. District Court in Boston for Judge William G. Young.

Russ Sullivan, President, Bondcliff HR Advisors, LLC

Russ has worked for over 30 years in human resources including C level positions for health care and technology companies, including start-ups, public and private entities. 

Russ received his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University.


Mim Minichiello, President - Employee Benefits, HUB International New England

With over 25 years of experience, Mim provides leadership and implementation of employee benefit initiatives across the New England Region, building and expanding the HUB New England’s offerings as the top employee benefits solution provider.  Before joining HUB New England, Mim served in executive positions within the insurance brokerage and health plan industry. Mim’s experience lies in executing strategic growth and operational plans, building and implementing innovating sales strategies, and cultivating best-in-class teams.. 

Outside of her leadership role, with HUB New England, Mim is the Chair of the YW Boston, an organization committed to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Mim is also a member of New England Employee Benefits Council, Society for Human Resources, The Boston Club, and The Commonwealth Institute. 

Mim is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy. Mim has also received a graduate certificate in management from Radcliffe College, and has completed AHIP’s Executive Leaders program with the Certified Health Insurance Executive designation.
