Understanding Autism Services for Employer Benefit Plans

The presentation will cover the history of the autism and the factors related to its current prevalence. Next, DSM V diagnostic criteria will be shared along with the scientific basis underlying Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment effectiveness and the evolution of ABA treatment. BHO’s autism management capabilities will then be discussed and followed by presentation of BHO’s ABA benefit management model. BHO’s significant clinical outcomes findings will then be shared followed by a legislative update on ABA benefit inclusion. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on lessons learned from BHO’s five years of managing ABA benefits.
Howard Savin, Ph.D.
Dr. Savin is the SVP of Autism Quality and Outcomes for Beacon Health Options. He is a clinical psychologist, senior behavior health care executive and entrepreneur. His accomplishments include the development of a multi-site group mental health practice in suburban Philadelphia, which evolved into a national managed behavioral health care company, AGCA.
He is the founder and CEO of Autism Services Group, the first independent autism insurance benefits management company, which is now a division of Beacon Health Options, LLC. Additionally, Dr. Savin has served as regional clinical operations director for American Biodyne and as regional vice president at Merit Behavior Health where his duties at both companies involved implementation of a broad range of commercial and public sector contracts. He served as senior vice president and chief clinical officer for Devereux – the nation’s largest not-for -profit provider of child and adult behavior health services. Dr. Savin has also published and presented extensively in the areas of quality and accountability. Recently Dr. Savin was appointed to the editorial board of Autism Spectrum News.
James Craig, LCSW, MBA
Mr. Craig is the Corporate Vice President for Autism Services for Beacon Health Options. He is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and management of services delivered to children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and their caregivers and supports the Beacon autism clinical teams throughout the United States.
James has held numerous positions in managed behavioral health care, most recently as the General Manager for Behavioral Health at Aetna. In this capacity James developed the first Autism Case Management program incorporating a case coordination and utilization management model in fulfillment of the emerging state mandates. James has developed a wide range of behavioral health programs designed to improve quality and effectiveness that have led to behavior change for those with medical and behavioral health issues. These have included telehealth coaching, online social media resources and client and provider engagement strategies.
