Talent acquisition strategies, by design, must be multi-faceted in order to meet the diverse and changing needs of companies. In order to effectively compete for the best talent, companies must look in non-traditional places for people who will make a difference. There are many companies recruiting and placing veterans in meaningful jobs that leverage their talents and experiences, but there are many companies that could do more. Missing this piece in your strategy could mean the difference between winning and losing this Talent War.
According to the US Department of Labor, since 2001 more than 2.6 million Americans have served in the military, returning to the civilian community with highly competitive skills, abilities and experience. Leveraging this highly competent talent pool to meet organizational talent needs makes sense, and if done right, can be a differentiator for companies engaged in this war for talent.
The Northeast Human Resources Association (NEHRA), one of the largest regional chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), understands the importance of this education and is sponsoring a series of workshops in 2016 that will address these important topics and meet the educational void in this area that currently exists.
Michael Dunford, the 2015 John D. Erdlen Award Recipient, most recently served as Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Covidien. He was responsible for Covidien’s global HR strategies, practices and programs including total rewards, talent development, talent acquisition, HR systems and organizational effectiveness. Mr. Dunford is a certified compensation professional and a retired US. Marine Corps Reserve Officer. He serves on the advisory boards for Year-Up Providence, Edge4Vets Massachusetts, and the AdvaMed Medtech & Biotech Veterans Program. He also is a former member of the NEHRA Board of Directors, where he served as Treasurer for two years.
